Three nights at El Questro have been fantastic. For those that don't know, El Questro is a station in the northern part of WA in the Kimberly region. It is around 100km from Kununurra though the last part is on the start of The Gibb River Road which has severe corigations and is not such a pleasant drive.
In 1991 a 21 yr old pom came to Australia with his girlfriend and while exploring the area by chopper fell in love with it. The story goes that he bought the one million acres for one million dollars. They had the vision for this place to make it accessible to anyone.
Today there are camp sites for up to 400 people, 20 private camp sites, accommodation for 60 in the bungalows (this is what we stayed in), permanent tents at Emma Gorge and five star at the Homestead for 18 people. It was sold by this couple in 2005. It is now run by an American company who own four other similar places in Australia. The land is owned by the Australian government, they own the lease.
At El Questro you can do so much on your own or participate in guided tours of many different types. We did a four hour sunset 4WD tour of Explosion Gorge and Broncos Gorge. It was amazing and we saw parts of ELQ that would not have seen on our own. At sunset we had cheese platters and drinks looking over the rivers and gorge. Photos don't do it justice but I will share some anyway.
We have also swam in hot springs and waterholes. Ned and Auds have done horse ridding and the rest of the time we have sat in the sun on the grass or done more exploring.
Amazing place, back to camping today!
Xx
