welcome...

the plan for this blog is to share our three month journey across the top end of OZ later this year, with our family and friends, most of whom live far away from us. However, it will not only be a recording of our travels, it is also a place where I will record some words and pictures of things that make me happy...just day to day "stuff" that may or may not appeal to you but does make me smile...enjoy...

Lake Argyle WA

We drove 500km from Katherine to Kununurra on Friday. When we crossed the border we had to go through a quarantine check point where they checked we had no fresh fruit, vegetables or honey. We then re-supplied with all those things in Kununarra and drove back to Lake Argyle. Amazing place, about 36kms off the main road. No phone or wifi...I must be getting in the swing of things now because I coped much better with this than at the start of the trip when we were at Canarvon Gorge!
We have loved it here. The pool is amazing and the sun has been out the whole time. We have been on a boat tour of the lake, been fishing for catfish, cooked up a storm and relaxed. The photos should tell the story.
Today we head to El Questro. Again there will be no ph or wifi! We are not taking the caravan, we are staying at the station....I can't wait for us all to have some SPACE!!! Three nights of REAL beds!
And....7 sleeps and we will be in Broome and I will feel the sand between my toes....ACE!

Katherine finds....

Katherine has been good to me. Not only have I been able to sit by a pool and relax I have found my most sought after vintage appliance and today I rummaged through op shops and came away with two fowlers preserving jars and a half pint cream bottle.....only small change but gosh it has made the dust and driving worth it!
Xx
PS oh yeah, the kids and ac went swimming in some natural hot springs but that wasn't nearly as exciting as what I got!

Grass...little dust at last!

We are in Katherine. We are staying at a lovely caravan park where there is GREEN grass! After three one night stops in a row, and one of them being without water or power, it is so nice to be somewhere for two nights in a row.
Devils marbles were fantastic...we loved seeing them at sunset and sunrise and I have come to realize that going there is actually a 'bucket list' thing to do for many. The no shower, flushing toilets and no power was a bit of a test but according to my husband...it is the only time I will have to do that on this trip! Anyway, it was worth it...sunrise was my favorite.
When we left there we drove 470km to Daly Waters where we stayed at the pub...a very Australian experience! It was a dusty pub/shack in the middle of nowhere that was also a caravan park. We got there at 2pm and it already seemed to be pumping with families, backpackers and grey nomads. We got one of the last two powered sites (luckily for ac!)
The kids had a swim in the pool, we had a dinner there too..."beef'n'barra" night. Then the night entertainment started....a fairly crass bloke who told jokes, sang songs and read the odd poem. We didn't stay bit heard it all as our caravan was at the entrance to the pub....he finally stopped at 9.30pm and we all went to sleep.
Now, we have a pool to sit by and very warm weather to adjust to. I have packed the winter gear away and got the summer out. It hard to believe that less than a week ago we were using a heater.
The highlight of my day was seeing a vintage sunbeam mixmaster in sunshine yellow in the window of a shop here in Katherine. I have wanted one of these for AGES. Total working order with all the bits and bobs! So excited....picking it up tomorrow! (I know most of you won't understand my excitement but I few will 'get it')

Beautiful things...

As I type we are on our way to Devils Marbles where we will camp for the night. There is NO power or running water for the night....hard core camping as far as I'm concerned. We have 14 sleeps until we get to Broome where we five star it for five nights and as we drive today I am thinking of that...ALOT!
Anyhow...because of all this roughing it, today I am sharing pics of some beautiful things that I have with me or have seen, a girl like me needs pics like these to remind me that it isn't all red dust and long car trips!
